Ether is the fourth[1] studio album by American rapper B.o.B. The album was released on May 12, 2017, by Label No Genre and distributed by Empire Distribution, it is the first album by B.o.B to be released independently.[2] [3] The album is the 5th installment in his Element series going dorsum to 2015, with the previous four compiled on 2016's Elements.[4] The album features guest appearances from Lil Wayne, Young Thug, T.I., Large K.R.I.T., Ty Dolla Sign, Usher, CeeLo Green, Young Dro, and more.

Background [edit]

B.o.B signed to Atlantic Records in 2008 and would get on to release his major-characterization debut, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, with the label in 2010. Having released multiple projects with Atlantic, including three extended plays (EPs), three studio albums and a retail mixtape, the two sides separated presently after B.o.B claimed that the characterization was "suppressing" him.[1] "There's a ban on BoB," he wrote on Twitter, before diving into his issues with his and so-label. "They boycott me, they are afraid I'll get likewise much exposure," he connected. "My own label doesn't fifty-fifty promote my albums, mixtapes, shows or events... Goose egg promo." Since his split with Atlantic, B.o.B. ventured off with his label No Genre and partnered upwardly with Empire Distribution.[1]

On Dec 4, 2015, B.o.B released a mixtape titled H2o (Nosotros Are The Enemy Really).[7] B.o.B would continue the trend with three more mixtapes; FIRE (False Idols Ruin Egos),[8] EARTH (Educational Avatar Reality Grooming Habitat) [ix] and AIR (Art Imitates Reality).[ten] On November iv, 2016, B.o.B released a compilation of the mixtapes, with the anthology titled Elements.[eleven] On April 1, 2017, B.o.B wrote on Twitter, "isn't there a 5th element".[12] On April 5, B.o.B unveiled the cover art for a projection titled Ether,[xiii] which prompted a fan to inquire "is this the anthology or the fifth element," to which B.o.B responded "both".[fourteen] [15] The series reference the classical elements which typically refer to the concepts in Ancient Hellenic republic, of earth, water, air, fire, and aether, which were proposed to explain the nature and complication of all matter in terms of simpler substances.[xvi]

In May 2017, in an interview with B-Real of Cypress Hill, B.o.B spoke on the idea process when creating Ether, not forcing his behavior on fans, and why the album is a less witting project than the rest of the Elements series: "some of information technology'due south fun, [some of information technology is to make you think], but even if information technology'south to make you recollect, it'southward nevertheless just skilful music. Information technology's gotta be near the music showtime".[17] In an interview with Fuse, B.o.B revealed he had plans to record his Elements series dating back to since earlier he released his debut album in 2010, adding his first album "was all well-nigh the elements", citing its embrace art, which includes globe, water, burn and air in the artwork.[18] When speaking in the subject B.o.B said: "Ether refers to the etheric realm in which all matter and all energy motion through. A lot of the Eastern traditions and behavior recognize ch'i, the energy that you lot can't see. It'southward the unseen."[18]

B.o.B said his decision to include guest appearances came from the previous installments in his Elements series not having any at all: "For this Ether project I kinda opened the doorway for more outside influences, considering the Elements project I put out, it was all me, I didn't want nobody touching information technology, because it had to be that way. But to cease it off with the fifth element, I simply felt like I wanted to actually brand information technology more of a grandiose g finale".[18] In an interview with Complex, B.o.B said: "All the features is merely really people who I fuck with. I don't collaborate with everybody, man, and I'g at a point where […] I just want to [work] with people who I gel with and vibe with. Even if I collaborate with the aforementioned artist six times, I'm nevertheless going to go along doing information technology."[19] It was revealed in an interview that the album'south 4th track "Peace Piece", featuring vocals and production from Big K.R.I.T., was originally given to T.I. for his Usa or Else: Letter to the System project.[20] In an interview with Fuse, B.o.B said he produced well-nigh one-half of the album, adding "Jacque Beatz and xxx Roc did a lot of production."[xviii]

Release and promotion [edit]

"4 Lit" featuring beau rapper T.I. and singer Ty Dolla Sign, was released as the album's lead single on October 28, 2016.[21] Information technology is the first song released past B.o.B'due south contained record label, No Genre, as a unmarried.[22] The music video for the song, directed past Republic of chad Tennies, premiered on April 5, 2017.[23] On Apr 19, 2017, B.o.B announced a concert tour, The Elements Tour, in support of the album.[24] On May 3, 2017, B.o.B revealed the album'southward rails-listing and released the vocal "Xantastic", featuring rapper Immature Thug, as a promotional single,[25] [26] [27] [28] making it available on the iTunes Store for those who pre-ordered the album.[29] [thirty] [31] On May 11, 2017 B.o.B held a "listening feel" for Ether at Studio No. 7 in Atlanta, Georgia.[1]

Ether received generally positive reviews. Joe Coad of HipHop-N-More.com wrote: "On Ether, B.o.B has stiff views, strong theories, merely luckily fifty-fifty stronger music. There is piddling to no take chances that he will render to the heights that he once occupied in 2010, but information technology doesn't seem similar his fans or him are too concerned about that these days. Truth is, that the music hither doesn't stray also far from what he was creating during his chart topping days and what'south really changed is the public's perception of him, unfortunately. Mainstream success and sales may have fallen to the wayside, simply Ether is a step dorsum towards the spotlight for B.o.B".[36]

DJBooth.net editor Yoh, wrote "Ether is well-rounded, not weighed downwardly past overthinking and theory deductions, but an artist revealing internal conflict and external circumstances. There's druggy trap songs, social commentary, and cocky-reflection. It's nearly like he's searching for residue within himself again... Ether is a reminder that B.o.B hasn't lost his listen, and while he'south no longer the blog darling and no longer the superstar, he nevertheless contains the talent that made the states cheer for his success in the first place."[37] In an article for XXL, the editor gave the album a four out of five, writing: "Focusing more on showcasing his lyricism and prowess equally an MC rather than scoring pop smashes, B.o.B shines throughout the album's 12 tracks, proving himself to be equally effective every bit a soloist every bit he is a collaborator. B.o.B may have lost his footing along the manner, simply Ether is a pace in the correct management and an admirable effort that proves he's nonetheless one of the more talented artists out of the South."[35]
